Welcome to 2012 at Placentino!

Happy New Year to all our students and families! The Placentino Staff and I are looking forward to an exciting and successful continuation of our 2011-2012 school year.
Everyone at Placentino is talking about CARE, our school-wide Positive Behavior Support System. I’d like to invite Parents/Guardians to join me on Monday, January 9th from 7:00-8:00 for a CARE Evening presentation. We’ll provide an overview of the “Bullying Plan/Policy” that is currently in place in our district, and we’ll discuss our CARE initiative at Placentino and its positive, pro-active goal to help create a culture of respectful caring throughout our school. I hope to see you there.

Welcome Back to School!

I hope that all of our Placentino students and their families have had a wonderful summer!  We are all looking forward to an exciting and successful new school year!

As we begin the year please remember that all of our classrooms are nut free, peanut free and tree nut free.  Students may still bring whatever they would like for lunch, however morning snack and foods brought into the classroom for celebrations must be “Nut Free.”  This includes not only food with explicit tree nut and/or peanut ingredients, but also those foods that contain the warning “may be processed in a facility that manufactures tree not/peanut products.”  A list of “Recommended Foods for Classroom Distribution” is located on the Placentino School Home Page.

For the last few years birthday celebrations in Grades One and Two have been “food free.”  Beginning this year classroom birthday celebrations at all grade levels (including Kindergarten and PreK) will be “food free.” This will ensure that all food entering our classrooms is peanut-free, nut-free and tree-nut free.  Thank-you for adhereing to this policy.

Also, don’t forget “Wellness Wednesday.”  To foster healthy eatting habits, we’re encouraging all our students to bring a healthy snack to school each Wednesday.

                             Placentino students CARE!

             Cooperation ..  Acceptance .. Responsibility .. Effort

This year we are introducing a school -wide initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports).  PBIS helps foster a positive school climate by:  establishing clearly defined expectations for student behavior, teaching and practicing these positive expectations, providing a common school-wide language, and utilizing data to guide decisions.  You’ll be hearing more about CARE as the year begins!

Our classrooms look wonderful and our Placentino staff is ready to go!  Welcome back to school!

Welcome Back! First Grade Open House is This Week!

Welcome back to all our Placentino students!  I hope that everyone enjoyed a fun spring vacation break.

A reminder that our Open House for Traditional and French Immersion Grade One classrooms will be held on Thursday evening, April 28th, from 6:30-7:30.  Please remember that this night is specifically designed for our students to share their work and accomplishments with  their parent(s) or guardians only.  I’ll look forward to seeing our Grade One families on Thursday night at the Open House!

Placentino Moves!  Family Fitness Night is coming to Placentino on Tuesday, May 3rd, from 6:30-7:30!  This is the first time we’ve organized an evening event of this type for our PreK – Grade 2 students,  and I am very excited about bringing families back to school in the evening to focus on fitness and developing life-long good health habits.  The event will focus on games and fitness activities that children of all ages and abilities can do with their families.  Stations will be set up around the gym and cafeteria and will include:  a shuttle run, an obstacle course, a sit-up challange, a bean bag toss and more.  Every participant will receive a ribbon!

The concept of a “Family Fitness Night” is described in our Placentino 2010-2011 School Improvement Plan.  I am very grateful to our teachers, HEPTSA and several parents from the Holliston Healthy Kids Initiative for helping me get the idea launched.  Check the Placentino  ”BackPack Express” for more information.  Placentino Moves!

My “Word of the Week” this week is “respect.”  We talk with our students about the importance of respecting each other at school, in the community and as citizens of the world.  Ask your child what the word respect means to him or her.

Spring wishes,

Mrs. Weene
